Requirements for Waiving
COMS W4118 for MS Program

COMS W4118 Operating Systems is a core requirement for the CS MS Program. Students who have completed an equivalent course at another institution may request that this requirement be waived if the transfer course is substantially equivalent to COMS W4118 and course and you completed the course with a grade of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

A course will be considered substantially equivalent if it covers both the operating system concepts covered by COMS W4118 and has a substantial programming project component that covers the programming aspects of the homework assignments in COMS W4118. The programming project should include substantial kernel programming assignments. Courses that do not have a programming component or only have a programming component at the level of UNIX systems programming are not considered substantially equivalent.

If these requirements are satisfied, you may submit a special consideration form for approval. Please be sure to include a detailed description of the topics covered and the programming projects completed. If there is insufficient documentation of the kernel programming assignments completed, the waiver will be rejected.
